A+RISE Strategies: A rich inheritance for our students

Since we began offering the A+RISE Instructional Strategies to teachers at schools across the country, we've heard very gratifying remarks from local trainers and administrators: “This is the essence of good, differentiated instruction!” “These strategies are the how for all ELL models;” “It's so simple, yet so profound.”
These comments point to the need for classroom educators to understand and use these critical instructional strategies. The Fishbone strategy, for example, may help teachers convey a concept to their students. The Cloze Method may give teachers a valuable tool in developing their students' vocabulary. But there is an even higher purpose to these strategies, one which I want all of you to keep in mind: these strategies need to be used by the students themselves. As students see teachers modeling the strategies in class, and as they use the strategies to extend their learning, they will come to think of these tools as their own. Call it “metacognition,” “higher-order skills,” or Daggett's “adaptive learning” : the true goal of any educator is to help each individual student learn how to learn. Self-sufficiency and the ability to apply knowledge to new situations in order to adapt and succeed are at the heart of a rigorous and relevant education.
And the true goal of A+RISE—the purpose behind the purpose of the cards and the CD—is to invite you to pass these strategies on to your students. It is they who must inherit these strategies as their own personal “toolbelt” of critical thinking, organizing and learning.
I'm sure many of you are like me in terms of how we find and renew our passion for teaching year after year. Each fall, you get a new crop of kids, and at first they seem like all the others whom you've taught before. As the year progresses, you begin to see how much more students can actually absorb, if challenged and then these kids begin to show their own unique personalities. As you work with them—often teaching them the same lessons as last year—you see how you can help him or her, like a clear, bright light showing you where to press, and where to back off. Very quickly, you become invested in each child's success, not just in your class, but in the larger spheres of life. What gift can you give them that is more important than strategies for lifelong learning and independent thinking?
A+RISE instructional strategies are truly valuable to your teachers, but they are essential for your students to succeed beyond K-12.

The strategies cards have been an excellent tool for the “new” teachers who still have not built up their own “toolbelt” as Evelyn stated. I have seen the difference in the teachers.
Recently I have heard repeated, “You can’t transfer, what you don’t posses,” and “You don’t know until you know better and then you do better.” Teachers are expected to do both from the beginning without this toolbelt.
A+RISE is a powerful way of reaching these teachers and teaching them to pass it on to their students.
The students can even be assigned or choose a strategy from the cards in small group work. The procedures are there! They can present different “activities” and teach the class the new strategy. With this, they internalize not only the concept, but a process of learning.
Empowering the students, A+RISE has given the students and teachers a new look at their education.
