QAR: Question-Answer Relationship

The complexity of questions posed to our students in standardized tests is often disguised by size of the passage and the number of questions. In particular, questions based on a reading passage create a double-jeopardy situation for many of our ELLs: not only must they quickly and accurately read and comprehend the passage, but they must also answer several questions based on the same passage which test multiple critical thinking skills.
Let's look at a best practice to prepare our students for the challenge: the Question-Answer Relationship. QAR refers to a strategy that allows students to identify the type of question and determine the way to find the answer.
- For example, a high school English language arts teacher in a reading intervention class begins QAR by using a graphic organizer in the Tree Map form. QAR at the top and the next four branches below are labeled:
- Right There
- Think and Search
- Author and You Questions
- On My Own Questions
- Below each category you find descriptors in short bulleted phrases. Students review the descriptors and then begin reading a short excerpt from the adopted reading series (students can read in pairs and take turns reading aloud).
When the passage is completed, the teacher refers to the QAR graphic organizer and reminds them that before they answer the questions in the text, they will jointly determine which type of question it is and thereby have a strategy to find the answer.
- Is the answer right there in the text?
- Is it one that requires a search of clues?
- Does the question require interpretation of author's intent or inferred ideas?
- Or is it a question that forces the reader to conclude on his/her own?
This level of analysis is required if our students are to have success in test taking.
