Supporting our ELLs in Math and Science

We've all seen the statistics on our secondary ELLs: how poorly they fare against their monolingual English-speaking peers on standardized tests, and the high rate of drop-outs and stop-outs among ELLs in high school. If you have attended an A+RISE training or heard Evelyn Arroyo speak, you know that there is a well-defined achievement gap at the secondary level for ELLs. This gap is perhaps most pronounced in the subjects of math and science, where technical academic vocabulary increases significantly at the same time that districts reduce their resources to support ELLs language development.
Among the challenges ELLs face in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is the fact that many of these content teachers have not received specific training in English language acquisition, and often feel that literacy is " the English teacher's job." Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, and in fact science and math classrooms are ideally suited to support and develop an ELL's language acquisition:
- Academic vocabulary lends itself well to literacy strategies that incorporate cognates.
- STEM subjects rely heavily on the use of nonlinguistic representations to teach, link and expand core curriculum.
- STEM curriculum tends to scaffold content knowledge and build comprehension sequentially.
It's my argument that STEM subjects, in fact, can be ideally suited to further develop an ELL's English language skills, and can give them the confidence, classroom success and critical thinking skills to persist and succeed in high school and beyond. The key to unlocking our ELL potential in STEM is problem-based learning. For me, it's not just a buzz word; it's a paradigm shift from lecture-oriented instruction (Sage on the Stage) to meaningful, co-constructed problem-solving where students develop a personal connection to core math and science concepts through inquiry-based instruction (Guide by their Side).
Some have asked, "How can my English learners succeed in a problem-based learning environment when there is a language difference?" It was a question I did not have a good answer for until I met Evelyn Arroyo.
When I first heard Evelyn speak nearly two years ago, I realized that I had found a like-minded partner who both understood the challenges facing our ELLs but also saw the tremendous opportunity awaiting teachers, schools and districts who could successfully "tap into" the enormous drive, passion, commitment and creativity of our ELLs. And I also realized that her approach to practical, research-based instructional strategies for content area teachers was the bridge STEM teachers needed to incorporate language acquisition and literacy instruction into their day-to-day curriculum. With Evelyn's guidance and the support of the A+RISE team, I have been working on a targeted set of instructional strategies specific to math and science, which we are calling A+RISE for STEM. I look forward to talking with anyone using A+RISE who would like to work more closely with their math and science teachers to better support ELL achievement.
Introducing A+RISE for STEM
A+RISE for STEM is a new product coming out in 2009 to support English Language learners in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math by utilizing proven research-based instructional strategies.
